An Employee Assistance Program (EAP) is often one of the most underutilized benefits in a typical employment package, yet it can be a powerhouse of support for solo parents.
Here is a structured one-sheet designed to explain what an EAP is and specifically how it serves the needs of working single mothers.

Employee Assistance Program (EAP): Your Personal Support System
What is an EAP?
An Employee Assistance Program (EAP) is a voluntary, work-based program that offers free and confidential assessments, short-term counseling, referrals, and follow-up services to employees who have personal and/or work-related problems.
The Key Essentials:
Confidentiality: Your employer does not know you are using the service or what you discuss.
Cost-Free: It is fully funded by your employer as part of your benefits package.
Availability: Most EAPs offer 24/7 hotlines for immediate support.

How EAPs Support Working Single Moms
Balancing career and solo parenting is a high-wire act. An EAP acts as a safety net in the following ways:
1. Mental Health & Emotional Resilience
Counseling Sessions: Access to licensed therapists to manage stress, anxiety, burnout, or grief.
Crisis Intervention: Immediate support for those “overwhelmed” moments where you just need a professional to talk to.
2. Family & Childcare Solutions
Childcare Referrals: EAPs can do the “legwork” to find vetted daycare providers, after-school programs, or summer camps that fit your budget and location.
Special Needs Advocacy: Assistance in finding resources for children with learning disabilities or behavioral challenges.
3. Financial & Legal Guidance
Budgeting Assistance: Help with debt management, savings goals, or navigating life on a single income.
Legal Referrals: Free or discounted consultations for family law matters, such as custody, child support, or estate planning (wills/trusts).
4. Work-Life Integration
Elder Care: If you are part of the “sandwich generation” caring for both a child and an aging parent, EAPs provide resources for senior housing and medical care.
Time Management: Coaching on how to set boundaries at work to prioritize home life without sacrificing professional growth.

How to Access Your EAP
Check Your Portal: Look at your company’s HR or Benefits portal.
Look for the Toll-Free Number: Most EAPs are managed by third-party providers (like Magellan, ComPsych, or Optum).
Just Call: You don’t need approval from your manager to use these services.
Pro Tip: Even if you don’t need it today, save the EAP number in your phone contacts under “Support Resource.” Having it ready reduces friction when a crisis actually hits.
