A miracle happens when we believe that it can. When situations seem impossible, belief can move us towards positive outcomes.
Thirty nine years ago on February 13 I gave birth to a baby boy. He was due on June 7. But my body wanted to expel him at 23 weeks gestation.
To say my son had to fight for his life is an understatement. It was the early eighties. Neonatal care was a foreign terminology to me.
Fortunately my OB/GYN had the wisdom to send me to MacMaster University Hospital in Hamilton Ontario. He was quick. I was diagnosed as having an incompetent cervix, when I lost my first born a year before.
The doctors at McMaster tried their best to keep my baby inside me. I was on bed rest. I still have problems sometimes around my hips because I could only lay on my sides.
Unfortunately, I got an infection from using a catheter and they had to force labor.
Birth was difficult because of a small baby not ready to be born. He was born breech at 23 weeks, weighing one pound two and a half ounces (13 grams).
After an operation to close the valve in his heart and multiple brushes with death the doctors told me there was nothing else they could do.
His weight had dropped to 13 ounces. He got frustrated at the tube in his nose and tried to push it out of the way.
But he couldn’t breathe on his own. It was also scary how his skin went all ashy gray when he lost connection with the machine.
It was hard to watch. He was so tiny and helpless. His skin was jaundiced. It was dry and cracked from the heat lamp and from multiple abrasions from a breeched birth. We worried constantly.
We had a decision to make. We made the only one we could. Leave him on the respirator. Pray. And let God decide if he lived or died.
Fast Forward 36 Years
On December 26, 2020 my son gave me my first grandchild. His wife gave birth to a beautiful baby girl.
I’m blessed that we trusted God to work the miracle many didn’t expect to happen. My son has always been healthy. No cold even the first 6 years of his life. He had to be treated for damage to his voice box. He is a singer. Because he was on the respirator for four months the tube shift the natural position of his voice box.
Still my now 39 year old son is creating his own miracles. Because of him, I’m the proud grandmother of two beautiful angels.
He is a husband, father, author, singer/songwriter/producer, music teacher, ordained minister, and worship leader.
This is how miracles happen. You trust that God will work through what the doctors say is a hopeless situation. Because only God knows when a life will end. No one else.
“And without faith, It’s impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and the he rewards those who earnestly seek him.” Hebrews 11:6
